Four Ways to Prevent Blocked Drains

Four Ways to Prevent Blocked Drains

From rising water in the shower to overflowing toilets, blocked drains are not fun! However, more often than not, just a few simple changes can prevent blockages and keep your system running smoothly.

Here are four easy ways of preventing domestic blockages.

Be careful what you flush

While it’s easy to flush wipes down the toilet, food down the sink and a whole host of other items, your drains will not appreciate it. Domestic systems are not designed to flush anything more than water and toilet waste so when foreign materials appear this can cause blockages. Always put waste in the bin and use your drains as intended.

Clean your drains regularly

Regular cleaning is one of the best ways of preventing blockages. Always remove hair from your plug and do your best to remove soap scum and other dirt that could form into large blockages. Small clogs will attract more debris and before long the pipe will be completely blocked. If you want to avoid chemicals, there are many at-home methods that you can use such as white vinegar and baking soda to dissolve any gunk that’s blocking the pipe.

Use a plug strainer

Even when you’re careful debris can still end up in your plug. However, by investing in a drain cover or sink strainer, you can catch it all before it makes its way into the pipe. They can catch food waste and hair so all you need to do is removed the strainer and tip it into the bin.
