How to Reduce Your Water Usage

How to Reduce Your Water Usage

Have you ever taken a look at your water bill and wondered why it was so high? You’re then probably tempted to try and reduce the amount of water you use in your day to day life, and encourage everyone else in your household to do the same.

High water bills, however, may indicate a leak in your pipes or drainage system. So it’s important you rule this out before you take steps to cut down your water usage. It may be worth contacting a drainage specialist to conduct a drainage survey first.

If there are no leaks and you have just been using too much water, here’s how you can reduce your water usage.

Toilets

Flushing the toilet requires a large amount of water, and we flush it multiple times a day. To minimise this, only flush when essential and avoid using the toilet as a bin for tissues and other items. You can also fill up a plastic bottle and place it in the cistern so that it requires less water to fill up.

Taps

Don’t leave the water running, particularly when doing things like brushing your teeth. It’s also a good idea to get any leaky taps repaired as a constant drip can start to add up over time.

Showers

Take shorter showers instead of baths, and while you leave the shower running to wait for the water to heat up, you can collect the cold water in a bucket to be used for other tasks, like watering your plants. You can also invest in a low-flow showerhead.

Dishwashers

Only turn the dishwasher on when it is completely full and, if your model is quite old, investing in a new dishwasher that is more efficient will help bring your water consumption down.

When hand washing dishes, try to use water at a slightly cooler temperature and only turn the tap on when you are ready to rinse the dishes.

Drainage system

Keep an eye on your water bill and if it doesn’t come down, seek a drainage specialist to diagnose the problem. If there are any leaks or wear and tear, they will be able to fix it for you.
